Mixed conditions greeted the racers to Donington Park for the 3rd round of the 2011 Britcar British Endurance Championship – the torrential rain that plagued Saturday morning miraculously cleared and the track was dry for qualifying on the Saturday afternoon. After a difficult two weeks in which the car was taken right down to its chassis and a new fuelling system and wiring loom manufactured and fitted by the Team, MacG Racing had good showing at a shakedown test earlier in the week and the Friday practice on old tyres. The team were confident that they could be up at the front of the pack.

The short lap which had up to 42 cars on it at any one time meant that traffic slowed Jonny MacGregor for his first few laps of the qualifying session, so the yellow Ultima headed into the pits for Adam Wilcox to wait for a gap to emerge for a quick lap time. Wilcox headed out, and immediately complained of a tail happy car. He struggled round to a conservative laptime in the 1.11’s, taking a disappointing 14th on the grid. An investigation by the Team after the race found that the drive hub had failed in the rear upright, causing the instability in the rear of the car.

Having overcome the trials of the previous day, the Team managed to get the car ready for the race, – a new upright assembly was sourced from Ultima overnight and fitted the in the morning prior to the race. Wilcox headed out first, and within 4 laps was already upto 8th position and was chasing down the Flatsix Prosport. Suddenly the LS7 in the back of the Ultima sounded very rough and was down on power, and Wilcox continued for a couple of laps, but the issue did not clear up. He pitted and the crew opened the rear clam to find cylinder number 1 had thrown its HT lead into the exhaust manifold, burning it into two parts. Wilcox was sent back out on 7 cylinders whilst a replacement lead was sourced. 8 laps later he was back in the pits whilst the Team fitted the replacement lead – a couple of minutes later the Ultima was back out, sadly running 6 laps down on the leader. Wilcox showed good pace consistently running in the 1:11’s, until he came in for the first scheduled fuel stops and MacGregor took over.

Jonny MacGregor headed out in 33rd position, and ran a 40 minute stint, consistently lapping between 1:11 and 1:13, despite losing 5th gear. MacGregor pulled the car back up to 21st position, and handed back over to Wilcox who would head into the safety car period still 6 laps behind the lead Mosler.

With the production race finishing after 2 hours, the GT cars lined up behind the safety car whilst the production cars were removed from the circuit. Once the safety car left the track, Wilcox was immediately on the move, lapping around 2 seconds a lap quicker than the opposition, taking each car one by one. Consistently lapping in the low 1:10’s, Adam Wilcox was on a charge, proving the pace the MacG Racing  Ultima was capable of. After a superb couple of pitstops by the Team, Jonny MacGregor was preparing himself for a double stint to the end of the race, when across the radio came the news that the car had lost all drive out of the old hairpin, with the car stranded under the bridge. This signalled the end of the race for MacG Racing, with just an hour to go, after making up so much time after the ignition issues earlier in the race.
